Rahu - The Cosmic Shadow of Ambition and Illusion

Rahu, also known as the shadow of ambition and illusion within the Celestial framework of Vedic Astrology, is perhaps the most mysterious and misunderstood placement in Vedic Astrology.

Unlike planets like the Sun and Mars, Rahu lacks physicality and exists only as a mathematical point at which the Moon’s Path intersects with the Ecliptic Plane (the path of the Sun).

Because of its lack of substance, it is referred to as a Chaya Graha or a “Shadow Planet.” Although it lacks physicality, Rahu is one of the most potent influences in the material world, often even more powerful than that of the visible planets.

Rahu embodies the human ego’s insatiable desires: the desire for worldly success and the desire to move beyond traditional boundaries.

If the Sun symbolises Light and Truth, then Rahu represents the Smoke that clouds it. Rahu represents the “Dragon’s Head” in Western astrology, representing the direction our Soul is to be drawn to in this lifetime as we experience worldly abundance.

Rahu is the planet of the “Outcast,” the “Rebel,” and the “Innovator.” Rahu represents all things that are Foreign, Non-Traditional, and Futuristic. Although Rahu is typically associated with confusion and illusion (Maya), Rahu is also responsible for motivating humanity to discover the unknown, create new technologies, and achieve sudden, dramatic rises in position.

Thus, the study of Rahu can provide insight into balancing our strongest desires with the Truth of our Spiritual Evolution.

Core Identity

Rahu is a master of disguise, and its identity as a node of the Moon provides clarity to its restless and ravenous nature.

Rahu primarily acts through the “Tamas” Guna, which is an expression of ignorance and the weight of Material Desire. However, the Element of Rahu is Air, thus creating an influence that is mysterious, random, and cerebral.

Since Rahu is not considered a traditional “planet,” it acts as “the Magnifier” for the ruling planet of the sign in which it resides. It has often been referred to as “Shani-vat Rahu,” which means that Rahu reflects the disciplined and technically proficient nature of Saturn, but does so with much more disorderly and obsessed energy.

Rahu is most powerful from a material perspective in determined signs, such as Taurus or rational signs, such as Gemini, in order for Rahu’s relentless thirst for stability or knowledge to be realised.

Rahu’s Significations (Karakatwas)

The influence of Rahu is always outward. What does this mean? Well, Rahu brings an outward focus to material things like status, the breaking of taboos, and worldly desires (Maya).

So what does all this mean? We often hear people say that Rahu represents “the missing piece” to happiness. It is a planet of obsession; if you look at Rahu’s placement in your Astrology Chart, you will also see where you are the most ambitious, and may also see where you are in a position to overdo things!

Rahu is a planet of innovation; it is also the planet associated with challenges to societal norms / stereotypes. Ruled by Rahu are the unexpected events / windfalls / shock factors in life.

Physical Body- Rahu Rules Nervous System & Skin

Rahu has authority over the Nervous System and Skin. Because it is a shadow planet, many of the ailments associated with Rahu can be difficult to diagnose (referred to as “mystery illnesses”); Rahu also rules phobias and struggles with mental health, or hallucinations / excessive anxiety.

Rahu is also connected to your Digestive system, how you process toxins in your body, and what happens when you have to deal with foreign substances. When Rahu is in a strong position in a person’s chart, they often have a magnetic / electrifying presence about them; when Rahu is afflicted, the individual may have sleeping disorders, chronic restlessness, or sensitivity to toxins and chemicals.

Relationships- Rahu Represents Grandfather & Foreigners

In the family tree of Astrology, Rahu is the representation of your Paternal Grandfather; in a larger, more global sense, Rahu is also representative of Foreigners, or those who fall outside of one’s Traditional Religion, Caste, or Society; ultimately representing “anyone other than you”.

In today’s world, Rahu is often represented by Cultural Marriages and relationships that challenge societal norms.

Professions – Rahu Rules Technology, Politics, Smuggling

Lastly, since Rahu is the master of Illusion and the future, Rahu has the authority over Information Technology / Electronics / Aviation as well. In addition, Rahu is the primary planet responsible for Politics and mass media, since both require the ability to influence public perception (the two industries are also “shady” in that there is a lot going on behind the scenes).

Finally, because of its shadowy nature, Rahu governs clandestine actions such as espionage, smuggling, and the pharmaceutical industry (specifically drugs / chemicals); anyone who works in a profession utilising technology or requires an out-of-the-box type of thinking is using Rahu’s energy.

Mythological and Astronomical Context

The tale of Rahu is one of the most well-known of all Vedic mythology and gives us an understanding of why he is perpetually chasing after the sun and moon.

Narrative Background: A Narrative of the Churning of the Ocean

According to the Puranas, during the time that the gods and demons were fighting over the nectar of immortality (amrita) that they churned from the ocean (samudra manthan), there was a demon named Svarbhanu who disguised himself as a god and sat between the sun and moon to drink some of the nectar.

Upon recognising that he was not a god, the sun and moon alerted Lord Vishnu, who immediately used his Sudarshana Chakra and severed the demon’s head. Unfortunately, by the time Lord Vishnu got to him, the demon had already ingested the nectar, and therefore, although he was decapitated, he didn’t die.

The demon’s head became Rahu, and his body became Ketu. Thus, Rahu had an insatiable appetite, and because he had no stomach, he could never be satisfied. Rahu constantly tries to exact revenge on the sun and moon by eclipsing their light from the sky, thereby taking back the nectar of immortality that they had helped prevent him from consuming at the time of the churning of the ocean.

Vimshottari Dasha: 18 Years of Desire

According to the Vimshottari Dasha system, Rahu will go through a period of 18 years. The 18 years of Rahu are often some of the most life-changing and unpredictable experiences for an individual. When in Rahu’s mahadasha, the individual will often make a career leap, travel to a foreign country and have an intense desire for material accomplishments.

On the other hand, a person will also experience many periods of confusion and “smoke and mirrors,” where an individual may achieve their desires and then later realise that those desires do not offer lasting peace.

Rahu’s Relationships with other Planets

Rahu is a rebel, but he also shares a philosophical connection with those who have achieved power and have a respect for material reality:

Friends with Mercury, Venus and Saturn: Rahu has a great appreciation for Mercury’s intellect, Venus’ luxury and Saturn’s cold, analytical power.

Enemies with the Sun, Moon and Mars: Rahu and the Sun are in direct conflict with each other because the Sun represents light, the Moon represents emotion, and Mars represents direct and honourable combat.

Neutral with Jupiter: Jupiter is able to sometimes temper Rahu’s desire for material gain because of Jupiter’s wisdom, but overall, Jupiter and Rahu’s energies are very different.

Behaviour Analysis

Rahu works as a lens, making everything appear larger and in either a good way or a bad way.

Rahu in a Dignified position (The Brilliant Innovator)

When Rahu is favourably positioned, especially in Taurus, Gemini and the 3rd, 6th, or 11th house, the person will have Extreme Ambition and a Worldwide Vision. These are the people who are ahead of their time. They are inventors, master politicians and entrepreneurs who can see opportunity where other people only see risk, and they have an ability to influence large numbers of people, making them extremely successful with very little exertion on their behalf.

They are adaptable and can assimilate into any culture or social environment, no matter where they are in the world.

Rahu in an Afflicted position (The Lost Soul)

When Rahu is poorly positioned and/or conjunct sensitive planets, the energy manifests as Obsessive-Compulsive Tendencies and confusion. A person may have deep-seated fears, be addicted to something, or tell lies. Someone may pursue one material object after another and not feel accomplished. An afflicted Rahu can bring about scandals and an unexpected fall from grace, or the feeling of being an “Outcast” forever misunderstood by society.

Remedies & Rituals

Rahu is a Shadow Planet of the Mind, so Treatments focus on grounding energy and “clearing the smoke / shadow” from one’s view. Here is an example of some of the various treatments:

Gemstone: For Rahu, it is the gemstone “Hessonite” (aka Gomed), which should be set in silver and worn on the middle finger; Hessonite is believed to clear mental confusion and protect against sudden negativity.

Mantra: Chanting is said to balance Rahu’s “Vayu” (Air) energy. (Some examples are as follows):

Seed Mantra: “Om Raam Rahve Namah”

Gayatri Mantra for Rahu: “Om Nagadhwajaya Vidmahe, Shikhi Hastaya Dheemahi, Tanno Rahuh Prachodayat”

Day of the Week: Since Saturday follows Saturn (Rahu’s planetary ruler), many people perform treatments on this day. Additionally, when afflicted by “severe” results, many people perform treatment during “Rahu Kaal” (the exact daily period for Rahu). The victims of these afflictions may also benefit from wearing the above Gemstones in order to alleviate the effects of Rahu’s shadowy influence on Saturdays.

Donations (Daana): When attempting to appease Rahu, many practitioners donate Black Lentils (Urad Dal), Mustard Oil, Blankets and/or Lead. In addition, feeding birds and/or ants is also a powerful method of satisfying Rahu’s “hunger” (Rahu wants to be nourished by the good deeds of others).

Lifestyle Change: Living a “clean” and “transparent” life is the most effective way to treat Rahu; as Rahu thrives on darkness / shadow, living and acting with integrity and not using intoxicants (which fog the mind) will help to neutralise its power.

Practising meditation and “staying present” will help curb Rahu’s obsessive nature of worrying about the future. Grounding one’s feet on the earth and spending time in nature will help balance this air/wind-like restless energy characteristic of Rahu.

Most importantly, by honouring your ancestors and helping marginalised individuals within our society, you can convert Rahu’s negative energy into positive energy, a true blessing from above.

By studying the characteristics of Rahu, we can conclude that your desires are not your enemy. They are your compass. If you learn to “drive” your passions (ambition), as opposed to allowing them to “drive” you, Rahu can become your wings and lift you to heights previously unattainable.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Rahu is a Chhaya Graha (shadow planet), meaning it’s only an imaginary point in space, unlike a physical planet such as Mars or Venus.

In astrology, Rahu is where the Moon crosses the Ecliptic Path. In essence, Rahu represents the Nodes of the Moon. Symbolically, Rahu represents the insatiable nature of desire and ambition, as well as our future self-awareness.

Rahu energy governs all things that are out-of-the-box, off-beat or unconventional; foreign; and innovative. Rahu can often create chaos in our lives due to its ever-changing nature. Still, it is also what drives humanity’s innovations to continue developing and our urge to push boundaries to keep growing.

Rahu will enhance the energies of both the house and the sign that it occupies in an astrological chart. The Rahu energy creates an illusory “smoke-screen” effect by giving a false sense of having achieved one’s goals, regardless of the cost. The Rahu energy drives one’s obsession with worldly wealth and acknowledgement (fame), creating a false sense of security through material goods.

The Rahu energy causes individuals to experience intense restlessness, rebellion, and a desire to pursue nontraditional paths. Rahu can cause sudden financial gains; however, it also creates mental confusion and an ongoing sense of dissatisfaction because the reality of the achievements themselves will rarely fulfil the desire to achieve what you crave from your Rahu energies.

In Hindu mythology, Rahu was originally a Sura (a celestial being) who was transformed into a Danava (demon) named Svarbhanu after he disguised himself to take Amrit (nectar that provides immortality) from the ocean’s wounds during the creation of the world (Samudra Manthan).

Following the Sun and Moon’s example, in which Lord Vishnu is an Avatar, Lord Vishnu, the God of Protection, used his sacred weapon, the Sudarshan Chakra, to cut off the head of a demon called Svarbhanu. Lord Vishnu, who had already consumed the nectar of immortality, was defined as an immortal for all eternity.

The head of Svarbhanu became Rahu, and the body Ketu. Rahu is venerated as one of the Navagrahas (Nine Planetary Influencers) to seek his blessings, even though he originated as a demon.

Yes! Rahu is the principal planet capable of granting extremely large amounts of income. Rahu provides rapid “outsize” rewards in contrast to Saturn, which rewards slow, steady effort.

Rahu governs mass media, large-scale industries, global commerce, and wealth, offering the opportunity to achieve tremendous returns on investment when in a favourable position or supported by a favourable Mahadasha.

People who otherwise would not get rich have the possibility of achieving wealth through Rahu, provided they do not rely by the traditional means of income generation used by the vast majority of today’s citizens.

Rahu opens a person’s eyes to the potential available to them versus the risks identified; hence, when the opportunity is pursued, the individual achieves tremendous financial success.

A “bad” or afflicted Rahu can be characterised or manifested by chronic mental confusion, unexplained fears, and a general inability to focus.

Individuals with an afflicted Rahu often experience “brain fog” (a feeling of disconnection to reality). Additionally, individuals may experience sleep disturbances, vivid dreams/nightmares, or develop sudden cravings for addiction.

Those with afflicted Rahu have the potential for substantial legal implications, rapid loss of finances, and strained relationships with their father’s side of the family. If you continuously experience restlessness, repeatedly overthink things, or find yourself making impulsive decisions that lead to regret. Most likely, you suffer from an out-of-balance Rahu.

Rahu is classified as the head. Svarbhanu is the demon whose head was severed from his body (in the myth). The head represents the place of the brain (intellect) and the five senses, but does not share in the job of digestion. Thus, Rahu represents an inability to satisfy one’s greed through earthly substances.

Rahu represents never being satisfied with what one already possesses and, as such, embodies extreme greed, an obsession with material goods, and a desire to strategise intellectual pursuits. Because Rahu can see opportunities and think beyond his senses, he has a limited capacity to do so independent of Ketu (the other Nagava), his physical and emotional counter.

Therefore, Rahu’s worldly pursuits are always demanded to be either mental or material rather than spiritual or emotional.

Rahu and Ketu are the “shadow planets” identified by the image of the two intersecting paths of the Moon’s karma or karmic nodes. The two images depict two portions of the same entity. Rahu signifies the future effect (material) of the severed head, whereas Ketu signifies the past effect (spiritual) of the headless body. Together, they establish the karmic axis of a birth chart, representing the forces that affect the Soul’s progressive path, with teaching through strong Rahu and the end with Ketu.

Astronomically, the Sun, Moon, and Earth align for an eclipse when the Moon is at or near its nodes. Vedic mythology describes the eclipse as the result of Rahu and Ketu retaliating against the Sun and Moon for an event that occurred during the Samudra Manthan.

The Sun and Moon survive the eclipsing effect of Rahu and Ketu because they are immortal and are eventually released from their clutches by the force-generated light of the Sun and Moon. Therefore, this type of eclipse represents a temporary victory of shadow over light as well as the energetic shifts that occur when in a state of darkness.

Rahu’s protector is Goddess Durga. She is called “Simhavahini” (the Lion’s Woman) and is imbued with much energy. As such, she can counter the wildly chaotic and destructive energy of Rahu.

The act of worshipping Rahu, such as reciting the Durga Chalisa or performing the Rahu Shanti Puja, is said to help reduce the negative effects that Rahu has on us. Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesha are also considered protectors for those seeking guidance on navigating Rahu’s illusions. They can provide the mental clarity needed to do so, as they are both spiritual authorities over the “shadow” entities.

Yes, without a doubt. In Western Astrology, Rahu is synonymous with the North Node of the Moon. Both systems refer to Rahu as a mathematical point of intersection in space, rather than a physical body. In both systems, Rahu represents the direction in which an individual is travelling throughout their lifetime, aka their “destiny” or what they are here to learn.

In Western Astrology, Rahu is typically viewed more positively in relation to growth and development. In contrast, in Vedic Astrology, much more detail is provided on Rahu’s material and psychological influences on an individual.

Rahu provides individuals with non-conventional means of becoming wealthy. It will provide individuals with the necessary courage to take risks that most people would not want to take, i.e., it governs “the shortcut”, innovation, and the ability for individuals to manipulate large-scale systems for the individual’s benefit.

Additionally, individuals may find that Rahu creates opportunities from seemingly nowhere, such as in the stock market, technology, or international trade. On business ventures, Rahu will enable the individual to have a “Poker Face” and think ten steps ahead of competitors. As a result, individuals will most likely experience significant gains in status, along with “modern luxuries”, resulting in them becoming wealthy.

If Rahu is “good” for you, you will be blessed with a sharp mind, be very politically savvy, and possess the ability to succeed in foreign countries. Furthermore, you may experience “normal” exceptions to the established status quo, as related to your ability to relate to new technologies.

If Rahu is “bad” for you, then your self-destructive behaviours will manifest as obsession, gambling or engaging in illegal activities. You may also note that the success that you have achieved will be either short-lived, or the results of your previous actions have caused you to have a damaged reputation. In addition, observe what and how you say things; if you find yourself lying or manipulating others for small, insignificant gains, you may have been negatively affected by Rahu.

The malefic placement or affliction of Rahu is caused by the planets being positioned between Rahu and Ketu in one’s birth chart, creating obstructions for individuals. The best-known form of this is Kaal Sarp Dosha, in which both Rahu and Ketu hem in all planets. Individuals can experience delays in the success of their efforts, difficulties in marriage, or sudden health issues as a result of this dosha.

Rahu Dosha is often associated with a heavy cloud hanging over one’s efforts. It should be noted that the affliction of Rahu dosha is not a curse in and of itself; it is merely a karmic indicator that can be overcome through specific lifestyle changes and spiritual remedies.

The characteristics of Rahu can be strengthened through mastery of focus by developing discipline. Discipline helps to create stability in Rahu’s chaotic nature. One of the easiest and most effective ways to create stability in Rahu is through charitable giving.

One type of charitable giving that is extremely effective is helping those with leprosy or the underprivileged. Keeping a clean and organised home and avoiding clutter, especially in the south-west corner, also provides stability to Rahu’s energy.

Spiritually, one can strengthen Rahu’s benevolent nature by worshipping Goddess Durga on Saturdays and living an honest lifestyle to prevent Rahu from becoming malefic. It is also possible to harness Rahu’s ambition without giving in to the deceptions that can occur with Rahu.

Rahu regulates the nervous system, skin, and feet. Rahu also regulates the areas of the Rahu, which is a “shadowy” planet and not a physical object. It has neither mass nor gravity, nor do we see Rahu on any physical object.

Rahu is a point where the Sun and Moon cross in the sky. While Rahu is not physical, its astrological effect can be as strong as that of physical planets. These shadowy characteristics also contribute to most Rahu effects being psychological first (mind, dreams, and perception) before they manifest as physical events or circumstances.

Rahu is a shadow planet (Chhaya Graha), meaning it has no mass, gravity, or physical surface. It is just a location in space where the paths of both the sun and the moon intersect. Although it is non-physical, its astrological influence is recognised as equally powerful, if not more so, than that of physical planets in astrology. The shadowy nature of Rahu makes most of its consequences psychological before they manifest as physical consequences or circumstances (e.g., a new job or a bad accident).

Rahu is associated with the “unforeseen” and “accidental” because its energy is explosive and unpredictable. Events associated with Rahu can happen very suddenly and can often change people’s lives dramatically (e.g., winning the lottery, getting a promotion, having an accident).

Rahu reflects the breaking through of the obstacle of boundaries between the physical world and all other worlds. Events related to Rajh move at a “lightning” type pace. In astrology, the transits of Rahu are monitored closely for indications of significant and sudden turning points within a person’s life.

No. Rahu represents success in the material world. Many famous people with political power or business success are likely to have a strong Rahu as well. Rahu creates a “drive” within the individual to compete and win. Many prominent political leaders, innovators, and billionaires have a positive, strong Rahu placement. The malefic qualities of Rahu only come to light if it is placed negatively, or if one lacks the foundation for being disciplined with the power and desires provided by Rahu.

Yes. Rahu is the planetary lord of AI, according to modern astrology, as well as of all advanced technological developments, including Virtual Reality. He governs any “artificial”, “unseen”, or “synthetic” form of life, including the internet, cyber security, and coding, among others. Rahu represents the future and unconventional life forms; thus, his energy is perfectly aligned with the rapid rise of AI.

He oversees systems being developed to imitate human intelligence and push the limits of what is possible through logic and innovation rather than the normal progression of nature.

A Rahu Mahadasha (major period) lasts 18 years and is typically marked by many highs and lows. This timeframe will be characterised by significant material growth and major psychological transformations.

At the beginning of this Mahadasha, you may experience confusion and drastically change your life path; for example, you may find yourself moving to another country or switching to a completely different industry than the one you were in previously.

During this period, you will create great wealth and status, which will have a huge impact on who you are; however, they will also test your character. If you can handle the growth of the wealth and status along with the changes that come from being blessed through these periods of your Rahu Mahadasha, you can make this Mahadasha the most rewarding period of your lifetime; however, if you cannot handle the growth and the testing process, you may experience tremendous turmoil.

Rahu is the most prominent by 2026. Once Rahu completes its passage through Capricorn, its presence in Aquarius will bring about excellent travel opportunities for many. Some will benefit from these new travel opportunities more than others, since some of them will be influenced more strongly by various signs that are favourable for travel in their natal chart.

Rahu is also associated with foreign countries and geographic locations, and may be helpful if you need a visa, immigration plans, or job offers. Rahu’s position will allow you to make the necessary breakthrough to create the type of travel that is available to you. Travel that you do during this period could provoke anxiety towards simply adjusting to that culture.

Rahu is a primary astrological influence on volatile markets; whenever speculation, gambling, or significant financial bubbles occur in the stock market, Rahu has a significant influence. Whenever stock market prices rise dramatically due to speculation and hype, Rahu will definitely be in a beneficial position. When the energy of Rahu shifts or is aspected negatively by malefic planets, this “illusion” that is supporting the market will be broken and lead to very dramatic outcomes in the market that are far worse than expected, whenever prices have become highly speculative.

Rahu influences collective investor behaviour towards greed and fear; consequently, it would be reasonable to believe that many investors with strong Rahu influences have some form of “knowing instinct” concerning cyclical price trends; hence, they will have entered into/ exited from securities, subscriptions, etc., well ahead of the eventual crash of the securities.

If Rahu and Jupiter occupy the same house or have a close conjunction in a natal chart, there is a formation of conscious and unconscious energies that are called Guru Chandal Dosha. As analysed, conscious and unconscious energy influences the ability to make appropriate decisions, guided by the wisdom of Jupiter, and contributes to rebellion against tradition, authority, rules, and regulations.

Due to this formation, you may feel highly ambitious and may seek to utilise unethical behaviours to achieve your ambitions. However, Guru Chandal Dosha could lead to creative, out-of-the-ordinary expressions of knowledge or spirituality. Therefore, you will continue to work extremely hard to maintain the integrity that you would have maintained had this relationship not affected you.

Rahu is known to create obsession in relationships. When it comes to relationships, you are typically pulled toward your partner(s) through the magnetic force created by the planetary relationship of Rahu to your natal placements.

However, in most instances, this relationship is relatively unstable with respect to foundation and mating compatibility. In addition, Rahu can bring possessiveness, jealousy, and idealism to the way the partner is viewed rather than to how he/she behaves.

When under the influence of Rahu, you are likely to have a relationship with someone who is somewhat of an outcast from the norm or is considered “forbidden” by others. The intensity of the relationships with Rahu is at an all-time high, but once the initial “smoke” screen is gone, you may face the reality of being heartbroken.

If you wish to nourish your desire for a healthy relationship with your partner(s), you will need to maintain the balance of extreme passions and rationality, as well as maintain clear communication with your partner.

The planet Rahu inspires the mind by activating memory and emotional responses. When Rahu regresses, he stirs up deep-rooted emotions and beliefs about fear and desire that reside in your subconscious mind. When you are overthinking, you are experiencing several “loops” in which your mind continuously generates “what-if” scenarios about every possible future event.

To prevent overthinking, focus on grounding techniques, meditate on things that bring you peace and engage in physical movement and activity. Overthinking in this circumstance is merely an indication of Rahu’s energy of keeping you active and restless; the best way to redirect that energy is to complete a creative project.

Yes, Rahu is well-known for being associated with mystery, unexplained, or hard-to-find health problems. For example, chronic skin problems, skin allergies, skin rashes, and other skin conditions are commonly linked to Rahu; often, a person experiencing these symptoms cannot identify the exact cause of their discomfort and may have difficulty obtaining a reliable diagnosis.

Because Rahu is known to project undesirable energy to the mind, these health issues often have a psychological component, or more accurately, an emotional or stress-related reaction. For the most part, they appear suddenly and just as quickly; sometimes this makes it difficult for traditional medicine to find a root cause of illness, and in many instances, support from traditional medicine will not solve the problem.

Traditional medicine, combined with strengthening the immune system and implementing appropriate stress-reduction techniques, will help a lot when Rahu causes your health problems.

Most importantly, to pacify Rahu’s negative effects, you must maintain “spiritual devotion” or express your “selflessness” toward less fortunate others on Saturdays. One very effective method to practice selflessness towards others who are less fortunate than yourself is to engage in charitable acts, such as providing food for the poor, and/or donating black blankets on Saturdays.

Chanting the Beej Mantra for Rahu, along with the Durga Chalisa, helps to keep one’s mind guarded from thoughts of harm. Do not drink intoxicating beverages, since Rahu rules all addictions and will only enhance his adverse results.

Keeping silver on one’s person and spending time outdoors with nature will ground Rahu’s ethereal, chaotic energy, allowing for more serenity and order in one’s life.

Yes, wearing a silver chain around the neck can be a useful remedy for Rahu. Silver is traditionally associated with the moon, which represents the peaceful mind. Since Rahu is the moon’s enemy, his energy increases agitation and restlessness in the mind.

The energy of Rahu is “cooled” when an individual wears silver, helping to reduce anxiety, overthinking, and impulsiveness. In addition, silver provides a protective barrier that stabilises the wearer’s nervous system and helps him or her remain less distracted and emotionally secure, even during incongruent Rahu transits or on days when navigating the Mahadasha of Rahu.

The most effective mantra to relieve fear and anxiety caused by Rahu’s energy is “Om Raam Rahave Namah.” It is most effective when recited 108 times daily (or at least as close to 108 times as possible) at Rahu Kaal and/or on Saturday nights, as this practice will eliminate the “smoke” associated with Rahu. Another effective mantra is the “Durga Mantra” (Om Dum Durgayei Namaha), as Goddess Durga is the energy that controls Rahu.

Both of these mantras will still the mind when fear and anxiety overtake one’s thoughts and help dissolve illusions of control, thereby building the courage to confront uncertainty with confidence and clarity.

In Vedic teachings, a dog is the vehicle of Lord Bhairava (a wrathful aspect of Lord Shiva), who governs the shadow planets; therefore, feeding a black dog (especially a homeless one) is a very powerful remedy for both Rahu and Saturn.

Helping to feed homeless dogs is considered a form of Sewa (service) and will help to please the entities that manage the darker and more difficult aspects of the material world. This type of sewa will help alleviate the karmic heat of Rahu that is absorbed into one’s own energy, while giving the individual protection against accidents and sudden misfortunes.

The special gemstone of Rahu is Hessonite Garnet (Gomed), and it should be worn based on the advice of a professional astrologer due to its potential to have very powerful effects on the wearer. However, if a person has Rahu favourably placed in their astrology chart, and wishes to gain more material success or if someone is going through a favourable time (Rahu Mahadasha), then they are often encouraged to wear Rahu’s special gemstone, as some (hopefully) will have a successful and prosperous life.

The others (hopefully) will benefit materially, financially, and in other ways from the powerful qualities associated with Hessonite Garnet.
