Astrological Significance of Holika Dahan 2026
Holika Dahan has its origin in Puranic texts revealing the story of Bhakta Prahlad and demoness Holika. It teaches us of the strength of one’s true faith in the Divine and has the ability to withstand any burning fire. The time from a Vedic Astrology lens describes the change of seasons, where during the “Agni” (fire) season we purify the air from the winter inertia and germs (pathogens) that travelled through the air from the last few months.
The planetary configuration in March 2026 is particularly interesting. The Sun will be close to the end of the zodiac cycle; while the Moon will be in the nakshatras of Leo or Virgo on this Purnima representing a balance between creative energy and practical materialistic structure. In this instance, since the Purnima Tithi ends early on the 3rd of March, 2026, the Dahan will take place during Pradosh Kaal which makes it spiritually important to burn off the “Sanchit Karma” (accumulated deeds) before the new lunar cycle commences.
How to Celebrate Holika Dahan 2026 Puja – Step by Step Instructions
Holika Dahan is not just a bonfire; it is a symbolic sacrifice of our internal vices including anger, greed and envy.
Purification and Samagri: Before Shubh Muhurat begins, bathe and wear your clean clothes. You will also need to collect the necessary items for Puja including: a glass of water, cow dung beads (Gulari or Badkula), broken lentils, rice (Akshat), incense, flowers, raw cotton moth and pieces of turmeric.
Ritual of Pradakshina: When you arrive at the fire site, offer the water and puja items to the wood pile. While walking clockwise around the Holika pile, take the raw cotton moth and weave it three or seven times around the pile (Pradakshina) representing weaving a protective shield for your family on the wood pile.
Mantra and Ash Collection: After lighting the fire, add grains and dry coconut to the flames, and chant the following mantra for protection: Om Prahladaya Namah (Translation: I bow to thee, Prahlad, the Supreme Devotion.) The following morning it is very auspicious to collect some of the cool ash (Vibhuti) from the fire and apply a small tilak on your forehead to keep a hold of the protective energy from the fire.
