Astrology is a divine science. It has a set of rules and methods which have stood the test of time and have evolved due to continued research. Jyotisha forms the earliest efforts of mankind to understand the connection between the microcosm (part) and the macrocosm (whole). Of all the different forms of astrology that emerged in the world since the existence of mankind, Vedic Jyotisha is not only the oldest but most detailed and accurate form of studying the impact of planets on human beings. The fact that it has survived for thousands of years and continue to be practiced today shows the value of this divine science for mankind.

Absolutely! Astrology is a science. Its roots are based in astronomy which involves calculating the movement of planets in the solar system. Making a person’s horoscope involves a great deal of mathematical calculation as well as knowledge about geography. At the same time, astrology is also a divine science. Apart from knowledge gathered through astronomy, it requires astute synthesis powers to arrive at predicting a particular event. It also requires intuition to arrive at the right decision. All of this comes from experience and regular practice.

Remember, astrology being a divine science, it requires the blessings of the almighty for one to be a successful astrologer. When we learn on our own, we often get confused by contradictory combinations and indications provided by various astrological texts. Most people give up mid-way due to absence of proper direction. Also, to be kept in mind is the context of the query i.e., Desh (location), Kaal (time or era), Patra (individual’s background).
First and foremost, it must be borne in mind that an astrologer is not writing the destiny of a person, but is only forecasting. The literal meaning of forecasting is to indicate the ‘likely’ impact of planets on different dimensions of life. Hence, no way are we supposed to believe that we are God. An astrologer only foresees as much as God wants to reveal. When a human mind is trying to interpret another human mind, some sort of subjectivity naturally creeps in. But just like a scientist, an astrologer needs to adopt an objective mindset and get rid of his/her personal prejudices, biases and opinions before he/she starts to predict. Indian astrology has been formulated by the sages in ancient India. It has reached us through literary compositions compiled by writers across various historical eras. The earliest treatise on Jyotish is Rishi Parashar’s Brihat Parashar Hora Shastra written in 5th Century BC.
